Backgammon – Three Main Techniques
by Karla on June 19th, 2026
In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 main plans employed. You must be able to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.
The Blitz
This involves locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious calamity seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better places for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, considering that you do not have other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
