Backgammon – 3 Main Strategies

In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 fundamental plans used. You need to be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious trouble considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, considering that you do not have any other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
