Backgammon – 3 Basic Strategies

In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main plans employed. You need to be able to switch techniques instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to block in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time difficulty because they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as this action much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
