The Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part 1
by Karla on September 1st, 2023
The goal of a Backgammon game is to shift your checkers around the game board and pull them from the board faster than your opposing player who works harder to achieve the same buthowever they move in the opposite direction. Succeeding in a round in Backgammon requires both strategy and fortune. Just how far you will be able to move your pieces is left to the numbers from tossing the dice, and how you move your chips are decided on by your overall playing plans. Players use a few plans in the differing parts of a game depending on your positions and opponent’s.
The Running Game Tactic
The goal of the Running Game tactic is to lure all your pieces into your inside board and pull them off as quickly as you could. This tactic focuses on the pace of shifting your pieces with little or no efforts to hit or barricade your competitor’s checkers. The ideal scenario to employ this tactic is when you believe you can shift your own chips faster than your opponent does: when 1) you have less chips on the board; 2) all your pieces have past your competitor’s chips; or 3) your opponent doesn’t use the hitting or blocking strategy.
The Blocking Game Tactic
The main goal of the blocking strategy, by the title, is to block the opponent’s chips, temporarily, while not worrying about moving your chips quickly. Once you’ve established the blockade for the opponent’s movement with a couple of chips, you can move your other checkers swiftly off the game board. The player should also have a clear strategy when to back off and move the pieces that you employed for the blockade. The game becomes interesting when your opposition utilizes the same blocking strategy.
