Backgammon – Three Main Schemes

In exceptionally simple terms, there are three basic plans used. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This involves closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time dire straits since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The best areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, because you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
